Gas Heating

Gas Heating

Program Description

Depending on what part of the country that you reside in, gas-burning heating systems can be either an absolute necessity or a rarity. For those that maintain, service and install gas heating systems or those just looking for a more in-depth source of accurate information, this modular training program focuses on furnaces and boilers that burn natural gas or LP. The combustion of gas to generate heat can be dangerous and should be thoroughly understood by HVAC technicians. This program covers many facets of gas heating including: combustion, system components and controls, heating sequences, installation, and troubleshooting.

Audience

This program can be incorporated into any HVACR educational curriculum that teaches gas heating, as part of your current program or can be used as a stand-alone course.

Wholesalers, manufacturers, and continuing education providers can use this program as a continuing education course to reinforce concepts in a 4-6-hour training program.

A Comprehensive Resource

Gas heating typically warrants a chapter or two in most HVACR text books. This program is a comprehensive resource written to focus on the specifics of gas heating and the systems that produce it.

Areas of Competency

This program has been cross-walked or aligned to the HVAC Excellence Competency and Task List, to assist instructors in providing their students with the gas heat knowledge and skills necessary for employment in the HVACR industry.

Program Topics

  • Safe working practices
  • Combustion of both natural gas and LP
  • Proper venting procedures for gas-burning appliances
  • Fuel system components of furnaces and boilers
  • Furnace and boiler components and controls
  • Sequence of operations and schematics for furnaces and boilers
  • Gas piping sizing and installation
  • Furnace and boiler installations
  • Troubleshooting mechanical and electrical faults

Gas Heating, Furnaces, Boilers, Components, and Controls

Through advancements in technology, modern heating systems have become far more efficient than their predecessors. Integrated circuit boards and electronic ignition systems have replaced the mechanical controls and manually lit pilots of older systems. Today, technicians may encounter furnaces or boilers that are older than they are, complex high-efficient systems, or anything in between. It is critical that they have a working knowledge of all these systems.

The manual provides students and practicing technicians with the information and knowledge necessary to safely work on systems that incorporate gas combustion to provide heat. The information to service, maintain, and install these systems is also presented in an easy-to-understand format. The manual is full of color images and diagrams and includes end-of-chapter worksheets. The spiral binding textbook will allow students to tear out worksheets for grading by the instructor.

Gas Heating was written to be a primary text that focuses specifically on gas-burning heating systems which can be used as a stand-alone text or a supplement to your current text book.

Instructor Resource Materials

PowerPoint presentation: The instructor resource materials include 11 PowerPoint presentations (one for each Chapter), 475 slides in all, that correlate directly with the training manual. Each slide within the presentation contains speaker notes that are designed to aid the instructor through the presentation and provide additional talking points. There are also PDF files that provide the speaker notes in a printable format.

Instructor Guide: Is a 51-page instructional supplement with course objectives with an estimated delivery time to keep the program on track. Answers to student worksheets are also included. Instructor resource materials are available through digital download or CD.

Certification

An Employment Ready Gas Heat Certification is available to validate that a person has the retained knowledge in a specific area necessary for employment in the HVACR industry. The gas heat exam covers: heating safety, knowledge of heating systems and components, combustion theory and heating fuels, furnace installation and service, and furnace troubleshooting and problem solving.

Proctors can login to review candidate test results and access detailed statistical reports. These reports help instructors pinpoint strengths and weaknesses in their instruction. Additionally, these reports aid the program in documentation for Perkins compliance.

Training Package

To accommodate the varying needs of each HVACR training program, this modular training package is available as a complete training solution (training manual, instructor resources and certification), or instructors can purchase the items they want separately.
