Professional Level – Written

Certification is an aid in identifying the scope and level of a technician’s competency. HVAC Excellence offers progressive levels of certification that identify an individual’s knowledge and skill level through each phase of their career.

Note: HVAC Excellence’s Heat Pump Installer and Heat Pump Service programs have been recognized by the U.S. Department of Energy as “Energy Skilled” respectively in the categories of Heat Pump Installation and Heat Pump Comfort Advisor. Learn more.

Principles of Electrical and Refrigeration Theory
(CORE – prerequisite for all exams)		 100-question exam covering safety, theory, components, meter usage, fundamentals of motors & capacitors, interpreting electrical diagrams, and troubleshooting.
Combustion Analysis 100-question exam covering combustion theory & heating fuels, carbon monoxide safety, building pressure measurements & general knowledge, combustion gas/general knowledge, and carbon monoxide.
Electric Heat 100-question exam covering electric heating systems & components, equipment installation & service, safety, theory, airflow, application, and troubleshooting.
Gas Heat 100-question exam covering combustion theory, safety, heating system components, electrical troubleshooting, installation, service, and troubleshooting.
Heat Pump Installer 100-question exam covering system design, applications, electrical wiring, and charging.
Heat Pump Service 100-question exam covering components, controls, heat pump cycle, service, theory, interpreting heat pump schematics, and troubleshooting.
Light Commercial Air Conditioning 100-question exam covering commercial AC systems & components, installation, service, theory, applications, and troubleshooting.
Light Commercial Refrigeration 100-question exam covering equipment installation, service, system types, components, theory, applications, and troubleshooting.
Residential Air Conditioning 100-question exam covering ACR theory, service, components, troubleshooting, refrigerant flow control theory, applications, installation, and charging.
Residential & Light Commercial Hydronic Heat 100-question exam covering theory, design, function, installation, service, and component recognition.

Professional Level Technician Certifications—intended for experienced technicians—are discipline-specific, closed-book, comprehensive written exams designed for technicians with two or more years of field experience. The exams measure knowledge in specific areas and help experienced technicians market their skills.

Prerequisite

Two (2) years of verified field experience prior to taking the exams. The Core exam is a prerequisite for all Professional Level Exams.

Purpose of Exams

The exams measure the level of knowledge possessed by a technician in specific areas and are used by experienced technicians to market their skills to prospective customers and employers.

Wholesalers, contractors, utilities, apprenticeship programs, and manufacturers use the Professional Technician Certifications.
