12:15 P.M .- General Session " Addressing the Skills Gap"
In many ways, solving a skills gap is like solving a puzzle; not only do you have to make the pieces fit, but you also need to make sure you have all the right pieces. Add to that the fact that the puzzle keeps changing!
Proper training consists of teaching a set of skills and/or competencies for various tasks that a student or technician is required to perform. Most programs try to teach these skills and competencies, but without properly assessing a student’s mastery of skills to those required by industry, an instructor does not know if they are teaching to the depth required for the student to succeed in the field.
The depth of knowledge obtained in your class will determine whether a student becomes a master technician/troubleshooter or parts changer. If you don’t have something to compare your student’s knowledge to, you don’t really know what they don’t know!
In this enlightening session, we will look at what industry considers the shortfalls of the workforce and compare their concerns against a breakdown of measured competencies with national assessments. We will provide examples of how in-depth some competencies must be presented and ways of measuring proficiency.
